Exploring History and Art in Beijing's 798 Art District

Stepping into Beijing’s 798 Art District, you can practically feel the history vibrating off the concrete. It’s this massive, gritty maze of former Cold War electronics factories turned contemporary art mecca, and wandering through it is a total sensory trip. I found myself looking up at towering Bauhaus ceilings where faded, red-painted Maoist slogans still peel directly above ultra-modern gallery spaces.

But my absolute favorite moment didn’t happen inside a curated exhibition. It happened when I slipped away from the crowds and took a turn down a quiet, industrial alleyway. I came across a restaurant window cut into a weathered brick wall. Inside, a group of people just sat there, completely still and detached from the bustling art crowd a few alleys over.

The framing and that heavy sense of urban solitude were uncanny. There was no staging as the ones we find in art galleries and museums, just a live Chinese Edward Hopper painting happening in real-time amidst the factory grit. I love getting lost when traveling, and of course I had a great dinner in that same restaurant.
