Meeting Zhang Jinhuan and Her Ink Shop in Zhengzhou

I walked into a narrow hallway on the third floor of the Zhengzhou Antiques City and ended up in a small shop packed floor-to-ceiling with wet paper, raw pine soot ink, and an unbelievable amount of energy. That’s s when I met Madam Zhang Jinhuan’s world.

Her studio is tiny, but her presence is huge. The walls behind her are covered in photos of local families, monks in saffron robes, normal people and old military guys who have come to her for decades to get their homes blessed. Right next to them, an old portrait of Mao keep close watch over her work and stacks of yellow talismans. Her roots are right here in Henan, the historical heartland of Chinese art and the home of Wu Daozi, the ancient “Painting Saint.” You can tell she carries that heritage as a personal duty.

She runs her studio as a sacred space for Buddhist and devotional art. Looking around at her shelves packed with statues of deities and towering, intricate scrolls of Guan Yin, it’s clear she isn’t just painting for decoration, her work is a form of spiritual practice meant to bring protection and peace into people’s lives. It’s clear her technique comes from her soul and not from an academic background.

We couldn’t speak a word of each other’s language, but we didn’t need to. Her pride was clear the second she started pointing out her work to me. After translating them back at the hotel I discovered that she painted these for 2024, the Year of the Dragon (yes! I’m a Dragon). There are no delicate, polite watercolor washes here. She grinds her paint thick and lays down heavy, unapologetic black lines, filling them in with vivid pigments. The characters are written in ancient, ceremonial Seal Script, weaving together wishes for virtue (Dé), wisdom, and abundance (Yú) resting on a huge, bright lotus.

Getting these wasn’t just buying a drawing; it felt like taking a piece of her daily grind and a lifetime of artistic devotion and spreading nice vibes home with me.
